If you’ve been stalking Kickstarter lately, then you probably know by now that Alex Preston’s Hyper Light Drifter recently obliterated its Kickstarter funding goal, and it’s no wonder! HLD is a drop-dead, rob-me-with-my-eyes-open-here’s-a-blank-check-GORGEOUS 2D action RPG made in collaboration with Samurai Gunn programmer Beau Blyth, and Drawn To Life composer Disasterpeace.
Set in a post-apocalyptic future, players will assume the role of a Drifter–or a person who goes out and collects old technology and artifacts from the world-that-was. But in Hyper Light Drifter, the protagonist isn’t just your average run of the mill Drifter. Your quest carries with it a peculiar urgency since your Drifter is searching for a cure to a crippling disease.
Drifters of this world are the collectors of forgotten knowledge, lost technologies and broken histories. Our Drifter is haunted by an insatiable illness, traveling further into the lands of Buried Time, steeped in blood and treasure hoping to discover a way to quiet the vicious disease. Echos of a dark and violent past from the dead eras resonate throughout and he can’t help but listen.
Also stated on HLD’s Kickstarter post the gameplay will be a unique hybrid of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Diablo, and will also have “lightning fast combat, more mobility, an array of tactical options, more numerous and intelligent enemies, and a larger world with a twisted past to do it all in.”
Hyper Light Drifter is planned to release sometime for Windows PC in June 2014, but a beta will be taking place sometime between now and then. But be sure to check out the Kickstarter, and definitely try not to drool as you peep the trailer!
