Racing games have come a long way in the past 50 years… from the black and white days in the arcade to the all-action blowout of console games today.
This infographic charts their journey along the way…
The 70’s saw the debut of the first racing video game in the form of Gran Trak 10. A black and white arcade game where players had to race against the clock on a 23” low-res black and white display.
Then, thanks to sprites, graphics improved considerably in the 80’s and the decade welcomed classic arcade games such as Pole Position and Indianapolis 500.
The introduction of consoles in the 90’s saw video games really start to take off, as racing moved from the arcade and into the living room. Mario Kart, Need for Speed and Gran Turismo were all released in the 90’s and provided gamers with better graphics and greater variety in terms of gameplay.
Fast forward to 2014 and gamers today can enjoy the immersive realism of games like Forza Motorsport 5 and Gran Turismo 6 – with their “next gen” technology, beautifully rendered cars and authentic handling.
