The Killer Instinct reboot in development for Xbox One will have a season pass as confirmed by Microsoft this morning. Players who download the basic game will only have access to play as Jago. In order to play as other characters, the players will have to purchase them separately. The developers at Double Helix games have stated that the character roster won’t be that large. Hopefully this will help to save gamers’ money by keeping the roster size down.
Most fighting games that come out are disc based games where you get a huge cast of awesome characters, but it is a massive cast. Some games have anywhere between 30, 40, even 50 characters. And in reality, most players don’t play that many characters.
You just only have so much time to get good at so many characters. So we wanted to take that into consideration and release the game in a way that took that into consideration and allowed players to get in and play the game at the level that they want to play it.
The above quote from Torin Rettig is absolutely correct. The immediate comparison that I thought of were the Dragon Ball Z series of fighting games, where there has been upward of 100 characters in a single game. This can make it difficult to pick a character style that the player works well with, and degrades their experience. Smaller rosters make it easier to pick your preferred character and then do exceedingly well with that character, which can make for some interesting match-ups with friends.
Whilst the season pass has been confirmed, there has yet to be any details on pricing, or how much it will cover.
