The Kingdom Hearts series is a beloved franchise that spans seven games across multiple platforms. But consists of only two “core” games so far – the last of which was released in 2005.
The series is a collaboration between Square Enix and Disney Interactive Studios with many crossovers between the characters and stories of the two properties. The games focus around the main protagonist of the series, a teenager named Sora. Sora is determined to save his friends who were taken from him at the beginning of the first game. In the upcoming Kingdom Hearts 3 you’ll be able to play as Sora again.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is technically the third core game in the series, but Square Enix game director, Tetsuya Nomura, doesn’t consider it part of a “trilogy.” Nomura states that this game will conclude all the story elements that were introduced over ten years ago in 2002 with the first game.
Nomura also emphasized that although the current story will end, the franchise will continue on. The director was quoted saying,
“But the series will continue. Only the particular enemy they have been fighting the past 10 years will come to an end.”
Kingdom Hearts 3 is still in development and it was hinted that gameplay will be similar to Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, which was released last year.
Kingdom Hearts 3 was announced during Sony’s E3 2013 conference, but no official release date has been given yet. The game will not be a PlayStation exclusive and is set to launch on the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.
