Just like the filmic universe it’s based on, the Lego Star Wars franchise is further expanding. The latest announcement in the franchise is Lego Star Wars Battles, a deck-building, PvP strategy game for mobile devices. It will be a free-to-play game with in-game purchases.
Lego Star Wars Battles is the product of a collaboration between TT Games, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, The LEGO Group, and Lucasfilm. It combines bits of all nine Star Wars films — including elements from The Rise of Skywalker — plus The Clone Wars and Rogue One.
The announcement suggests Battles will be a mashup of sorts. On the one hand is the deck-building side. Players will create decks using vehicles and characters spanning the Star Wars mythos, from Darth Vader and Stormtroopers to Battle Droids and Obi-Wan, the Millenium Falcon, and, of course, Porgs, among other notables from the Star Wars universe.
It doesn’t sound like the invisible line separating good and evil can be crossed, though, since players will build either “a deck of light side or dark side forces.”
The game also seem to contain PvP, tower defense-style elements, where players face off in “real-time, one-versus-one battles.” A big part of the battle system involves deploying troops to build and defend towers as players gradually push to capture more territory.
Despite Battles‘ emphasis on strategy, Sean McEvoy, The LEGO Group’s VP of Digital Games, says the game retains its signature LEGO feel:
LEGO Star Wars Battles brings all the lighthearted charm of LEGO games to an ever-growing audience of global mobile players.
It’s easy to pick up and play and offers fun, fast-paced LEGO gameplay for both new and experienced players.
Other details are thin right now, including specifics about deck-building and combat, but LEGO Star Wars Battles is set to launch sometime in 2020 on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
