Lionsgate and Telltale Want to Revolutionize TV with a ‘Super Show’

Lionsgate and Telltale Games want to change the way you watch TV – and to that end, they’re working on the creation of a ‘Super Show.’

So just what is a ‘Super Show’? According to Telltale Games CEO Kevin Bruner, a ‘Super Show’ is a mixture of scripted television and the interactive stories that have made Telltale Games famous. This new venture, created in the recently-formed partnership with Lionsgate will have no ties to existing content. This sets the ‘Super Show’ apart from Telltale’s previous games – The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, for instance, were inspired by the television series of the same name, and The Wolf Among Us was based on Bill Willingham’s “Fables” comic book.

Unlike Telltale’s previous properties, the ‘Super Show’ will feature entirely original content IPs, unrelated to previously released media like Game of Thrones and The Wolf Among Us.

Combining games and television has been done before, but with more limited interactivity – SyFy’s and Trion’s Defiance being the most notable example – but Lionsgate and Telltale plan to bring this to a whole new level. A ‘Super Show,’ as Bruner explains in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “combines one part of interactive playable content with one part of scripted television-style content. Both pieces, when combined together, are what make an actual Super Show ‘episode.'”

The intent is a symbiotic and simultaneous blending of script and interactive gameplay that may make the ‘Super Show’ so innovative – neither element will take precedent over the other.

Though Bruner declined to reveal any details about the actual content of the ‘Super Show,’ it seems fans of Telltale and Lionsgate alike have grand things to look forward to.
