During a Hyrule Warriors Legends panel this week, Nintendo revealed some key information about the development of the 3DS version of the original Hyrule Warriors. What we didn’t expect to be revealed, however, was the new character coming to Hyrule Warriors Legends with the Link’s Awakening DLC pack: Marin.

For those who don’t know, Marin is a young girl who lived with her father, Tarin, on the Island of Koholint. After Link’s ship was destroyed during a storm, Marin found the young hero washed ashore near Mabe Village. While there is little to know about her other than her role in helping Link through several parts of the game, she is certainly an interesting choice for a Hyrule Warriors character.
Why? Well here are the reasons:
- Marin is the first character to be added to Hyrule Warriors that does not have any special abilities. In fact, aside from her singing, Marin plays a very minor role in the story of Link’s Awakening overall. This makes the choice to add her to the game quite the curiosity.
- Marin is the first character to heavily imply a romantic relationship with Link. In fact, if not for all the interruptions, Marin and Link would have confessed their love to one another several times in the game. The only other character to do this would be Princess Ruto from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. While some may argue Midna shares this trait as well, it is never explicitly stated at any point of the game. This may be hinted at during gameplay, should Nintendo decide to add character-specific responses for her in the game.
- Marin is actually the prototype for a similarly named character, Malon. In fact, Marin and Tarin would eventually get both of their names changed to Malon and Talon, as well as share many design similarities in Ocarina of Time and subsequent games. This may be odd for some players who played the original Link’s Awakening game on the Game Boy as Marin was originally described as having an uncanny resemblance to Zelda. Despite this, Nintendo seems to have decided to use her original red hair instead of the blonde version used for her trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
- Marin gets turned into a seagull in the true ending, which makes one wonder what her true powers will be in the final DLC release. Will she sing? Will she use the Wind Fish’s instruments? Will Nintendo pay proper homage to her seagull form from the end of Link’s Awakening? Only time will tell.
Not much else is known about Marin’s character in Hyrule Warriors Legends other than the fact that the Link’s Awakening pack will be released sometime in the summer of 2016.
What do you think Marin’s attacks might be in Hyrule Warriors Legends? Is there a character from Link’s Awakening you would have rather seen? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below!
