Minecraft's exploration themed 1.11 update adds new mobs, inventory boxes & much more.

It has been seven years since Minecraft was first released to the public, and it is still going strong as ever, as Mojang continues to provide brand new content on a regular basis. After being revealed at last week’s Minecon, the major 1.11 update, dubbed “The Exploration Update”, is now available for players to check out on both PC and Mac.

Fitting the theme of adventure, you can now find a brand new villager that resides in the library. The Cartographer villager will allow you to obtain a map, at the cost of emeralds, which will lead you to the likes of the Ocean Monument and the all new Woodland Mansion.

The Woodland Mansion is a procedurally generated dungeon that is home to the Illagers, which Mojang describe as villager’s outcast cousins. Illagers have the ability to spawn waves of pillars that can inflict serious damage if they come in contact with the player. They are also equipped with the ability to spawn an all new mob called Vex.

Something that has been long requested is the Shulker Box, which is an inventory-expanding chest that orginates from The End itself. The Shulker Box will act like a normal chest; however, it will retain all of its items even when the box is knocked down, making it ideal for those that love to adventure.

Last but not least, Minecraft now has Llamas! Llamas, who you’ll find residing in the mountains, can be equipped with storage chests to help carry your items. Better yet, if you happen to be using a lead on a Llama, all surrounding Llamas will form a “caravan” behind the one you are leading. You will also be able to add colored carpets to your Llamas that will essentially act as a saddle.

Mojang has put together a small list showcasing just some of the new features you can find in the The Exploration Update.

  • Added cursed enchantments
  • Added the Observer block
  • Added escape portals in The End
  • Added the Shulker Shell and Shulker Box
  • Added exploration maps
  • Added the Woodland Mansion
  • Added Illagers, and the Vex
  • Added Llamas
  • New command: /locate
  • Removed Herobrine
