Monster Hunter: World Iceborne PC Expansion Overwriting Player Save Files

Another bug is plaguing the PC launch of Iceborne, as existing files are being overwritten with brand-new Monster Hunter World save data.

The PC rollout of the Monster Hunter World Iceborne expansion is again experiencing major problems just a day after its launch. After discovering a fix for the Iceborne not loading on PC issue (which appears to be caused by a conflict with mods), players are now seeing their save files corrupted and overwritten.

When in the main menu with the DLC installed, many players receive a message stating an Iceborne compatible save isn’t detected so one should be created.

Unfortunately, choosing that option  which is mandatory  creates a new save back at the very beginning of the game. It then overwrites your existing save file with the new one. Since the new file replaces your previous save game with the new data, that means all player data is permanently lost with no apparent way to get it back.

According to a report from Polygon, the developers at Capcom are aware of the issue. Unfortunately, there’s no ETA on a fix. Even when a patch does arrive, it seems unlikely the resolution will involve anyone getting their original data back.

We’re currently working on finding a workaround to keep your save data backed up and available after the problem is fixed.

For now, simply do not click the option to start a new game or create an Iceborne compatible save file — or you will lose everything! Eesh…

Monster Hunter World‘s Iceborne expansion dropped for consoles back in September of 2019 and arrived without many of the game breaking bugs that are currently plaguing the Steam edition. After launching on January 9, 2020 for PC, players have consistently reported an inability to launch the game, frequent freezes, high CPU usage, and now this save overwrite issue.

Have you managed to get Iceborne running and keep your save data? Let us know what worked for you in the comments below!
