It’s shaping up to be an incredible year for fighting games. We already know that Street Fighter 6 launches in June, and Tekken 8 is on the horizon. We’ve seen plenty of footage of both, but Mortal Kombat 12 got announced a little differently.
The news came during a Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call on February 23, 2023. A clip making the rounds on Twitter confirms the news. In the video, David Zaslav, Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO, confirmed that Mortal Kombat 12 is scheduled to release this year.
“And there’s lots more to come, including the highly-anticipated Mortal Kombat 12 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, games also set for release this year with amibitious launch projections,” Zaslav can be heard saying. You can hear the audio below.

Now, a lot of that is corporate speak, but what really matters is that we have official confirmation that Mortal Kombat 12 is slated for a 2023 release. It’s a weird way to get a game announcement; we haven’t heard or seen anything about Mortal Kombat 12 before it happened. The game wasn’t even confirmed to be in development, and NetherRealm’s next project was something of a mystery. No longer.
This probably isn’t how Ed Boon and company wanted to reveal the existence of their next game, but the cat’s out of the bag. Mortal Kombat 12 is releasing this year, alongside Street Fighter 6 and, potentially, Tekken 8. Add in the continued success of games like Guilty Gear Strive and Melty Blood: Type Lumina, the return of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 to the EVO main stage, and the impending addition of rollback netcode for DragonBall FighterZ, and fighting game fans have a lot to look forward to. Hopefully, we’ll hear more about Mortal Kombat 12 soon.
