If you’re a classic RPG fan, then you’ve most likely heard of stories filled with the Mother series. Known as Earthbound in the west, it is a classic RPG with quirky dialogue and scenes to remember.
The first game, Mother, came out in Japan on the Famicom and while its release was planned for the NES in the West, it was later canned.
Thus making its sequel, Mother 2, a.k.a. Earthbound, the first game in the series to hit Western shores on the SNES. Fans immediately fell in love with the game and were hungry for a new adventure.
Several years later, it was announced a sequel was being made, and while Japanese gamers were fortunate to have Mother 3 release on the Game Boy Advance, Western gamers had to resort to fan translations as it wouldn’t see a release outside of Japan.
Series creator, Shigesato Itoi, has stated in the past that he doesn’t plan on making a Mother 4 in the future. However, fans have once again stepped up to the plate and created their own.
It won’t be long before you’ll be using PSI to defeat hippies (or weird office workers with robot helmets) in a new adventure because the team behind Mother 4, a fan-made game which you could swear was an official sequel, has just announced a release date of Winter 2014.
Unlike other companies that have shut down fan-made games in the past such as Chrono Resurrection, Nintendo seems to be okay with the production of Mother 4…at least for now. Hopefully it stays that way!
More info can be found at the official site. Be sure to check out some of the awesome music as well. It’s so good you’d think this were a real sequel!
