While Darksiders III has only been out for six months, a new game in the franchise has already been announced, but it will see a major change from the format in the previous three titles.

Moving away from the over the shoulder third person mechanic of previous games and revolving around new horseman Strife, Darksiders: Genesis is shaping up to be a top down ARPG in the classic Diablo vein with gun and spell-based combat.

While no release date has been revealed at this time, the game is expected to drop later this year. Check out the first official teaser trailer below.

In addition to the standard lineup of PC and consoles, the game will be available on the upcoming Google Stadia streaming platform, with more details expected to arrive with a playable version at E3 later this month.

Apparently a prequel, as War is seen battling alongside Strife, the game will include a large collection of loot to acquire while battling hordes of enemies, as well as a series of puzzles. THQ commented on the upcoming side entry in the Darksiders universe:

Strife is called upon to save humankind from certain destruction at the hands of Lucifer and Genesis will feature intense combat, exploration, puzzle-solving, epic boss battles and serpent holes from heaven to hell

Darksiders: Genesis is also notable for being only the second game from development studio Airship Syndicate, which previously released the hyper stylized turn based RPG Battle Chasers: Nightwar. Fans of that game have been calling for a sequel since it dropped in 2017, but clearly they’ll have to wait a bit longer.

This new Darksiders entry isn’t the only franchise to recently see a switch to the classic ARPG format, with the Warhammer Fantasy universe getting a hack ‘n slash entry in the form of Chaosbane.
