New Mortal Kombat 12 Rumors and Report Point to Reboot, Platforms, and Release Date

Here's what we know about the most recent Mortal Kombat 12 rumors and leaks.

Mortal Kombat 12 rumors are starting to heat up, and it appears an official reveal could be arriving soon. Reports and alleged leaks have started making the rounds, purportedly revealing the game’s release date, platforms, price, and more. Indeed, the next installment in the franchise might be a reboot. And it may not be called MK12 at all.

The latest on Mortal Kombat 12 came on May 10, 2023. Series Co-Creator and current NetherRealm Creative Director Ed Boon shared an official MK tease via Twitter. The 17-second video shows a clock with the second hand counting down the time, eventually passing “12” and landing on “1.”

Discussion and theory-crafting soon took over the tweet’s comments. Some speculated it was the time until an official MK12 reveal, while others believed stopping on the 1 carried more meaning, and perhaps the name of the game isn’t Mortal Kombat 12 at all.

On May 11, 2023, new rumors appeared from leaker Billbil-kun on Twitter, later backed up by a report from Windows Central.

In their tweet, Billbil-kun said that:

  • MK12 will actually be a reboot titled Mortal Kombat 1.
  • It will release on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
  • It will have three separate editions:
    • Standard Edition: $69.99 for PlayStation and Xbox, $59.99 for Switch.
    • Premium Edition: $109.99.
    • Kollector’s Edition: $249.99.

In a subsequent tweet, Billbil-kun also pointed out that their information says the Kollector’s Edition will be “physical only, [and] not available for Nintendo Switch.” They didn’t share any platform information on the alleged Premium Edition for the next Mortal Kombat.

The report from Windows Central was published later on May 11, 2023, stating that the publication was able to confirm that Billbil-kun’s information was “legitimate.” The report goes on to say that:

Our sourcing suggests that Mortal Kombat 1 is targeting a September 2023 launch window, although plans may be in flux. We’ve heard that the MK1 character pass will feature various properties owned by Warner Brothers, including Peacemaker from the DC Universe, and possibly even Homelander from comic book series The Boys, amongst others we have yet to confirm.

While we do know something’s afoot at NetherRealm, that’s about all we know. Aside from Ed Boon’s clock tease and a cryptic hourglass clip, things have been relatively quiet. Well, aside from the reveal earlier this year by Warners CEO David Zaslav that the next MK would release this year. Allegedly.

Boon did take to Twitter after the most recent tease to troll fans, saying that “we never confirmed our next game is a Mortal Kombat game.” Yet.

For now, we’ll have to take all of the MK12 teases, leaks, and reports with a grain of Kronika’s sand until something’s officially revealed. And rumors say that could be just around the corner, too, potentially during the next PlayStation State of Play, allegedly coming in May (itself a rumor for now). Likely, we’ll see something at Summer Games Fest — unless Boon and Co. are really just working on Injustice 3.
