Now that 2016 is officially underway, we can expect to see a lot of trailers in the months leading up to the official launch of virtual reality, each showcasing some of the features of the various HMDs (head-mounted displays). Although there are quite a number of choices, the big 3 VR kits for gaming are the Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR (formerly Project Morpheus), and the HTC Vive.
In an effort to stay in the public eye now that we are steadily approaching pre-orders for the Oculus Rift, HTC and Valve have released a new trailer for the Vive Pre, their second generation developer kit, and the last few seconds of the video could indicate their intention to develop a sequel to Valve’s most popular game that doesn’t rhyme with “calf-strife”.
The video shows various immersive environments from underwater to outer space, as well as a clip showing off a bit more of the Vive app Tiltbrush, but just before the video ends we are shown a woman wearing a white vest and orange jumpsuit folded down to her waist. If you recall, this is the fashion choice of none other than Chell, the protagonist from Portal. The woman proceeds to raise her arms, distorting the walls at her sides, and blasting through the wall in front of her.
People have been clamouring for a new Portal game for years, as the last one was released way back in 2011, and it could be the perfect launch title for the Vive once it’s finally released.
Do you think that this is an indication of Valve and HTC’s intentions to finally give us a third entry in the Portal series? Let us know in the comments below.
