Since amiibo were first released by Nintendo back in November 2014 for Smash Bros. for Wii U, they’ve shipped 10.5 million units worldwide. North America had seven million amiibos shipped. Europe had the second highest amount of amiibos shipped (around 2 million), followed by Japan and Australia.
Over time people have purchased amiibo for collection and recreational purposes. A few amiibo, like the Villager, are now considered rare due to the demand for them and how few are available.
Nintendo is making sure to reprint as many amiibo as they can to keep their consumers happy. They make reprints depending on which amiibo get sold out first, how important they are for a specific game, and the demand by consumers and retailers. The Villager, for example, is getting a reprint with a makeover. And Nintendo will also be making a brand new Yoshi amiibo for the game Yoshi’s Wooly World that will be made out of yarn.
