There are game conventions and then there is PAX East. This highly anticipated convention, which sells out within minutes of tickets going on sale, is held in the awesome B-Town, city of Boston, MA. This year Square Enix dazzles us with an inside look at their upcoming release Murdered: Soul Suspect.
This unique take on crime thrillers is a single-player action-adventure game that takes place in Salem, Massachusetts and centers on Detective Ronan O’Connor who must use his ghostly powers to solve his own murder.
Detective O’Connor learns to use possession, looking through people’s eyes (literally), reading thoughts, and influencing people to solve crimes. In the ghost world, he will also help other ghosts who are trapped in “The Dusk” move on by helping them with their unfinished business, piecing together ghost stories and fighting demons.
The game’s setting focuses on the Salem Witch Trials in 1692, which saw public executions of people convicted of witchcraft. Due to its rich paranormal history, this was the ideal location in which to tell a story. During his investigation, Detective O’Connor must interrogate the ghosts of Salem to learn more about his own killer.

IGN’s Greg Miller hosts the panel representing Matt Brunner (Chief Media Director), Dennis Price (Art Director) and Mark Safarik (Retired FBI Profiler and Host of Killer Instinct).
After introducing the audience to the game’s fantastic trailer, the stunning concept art and the foundation of the game’s idea were shared. Afterwards, Mark Safarik was introduced and explains how his inside experience to crime investigation was crucial to the game’s storyline.
Safarik started with a slide only shown for a brief minute or so. He then proceeded to ask the panel attendees how many letter F’s they saw. Amazingly many had a different answer. This common notion of people seeing the same thing and then sharing different versions is quite true–as Safarik clearly pointed out.
It is because of this that crime investigations are so unique, requiring a person to view the scene from various angles. Pretty impressive I might add. This ability is used by the game’s character Detective Ronan O’Connor to compile everything he needs to solve his own murder.
The game is available for a closer look on the convention floor and panel attendees were promised “something special” when signing up at the booth. What it might be is anyone’s guess.
I know I’m definitely interested in this game thanks to its unique storyline. I’m a sucker for a good storyline.
Murdered: Soul Suspect will launch June 3rd on PC, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.
Do you think you have what it takes to solve your own murder?
