The PlayStation 4’s success continues.
Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) has announced that the PS4 has cumulatively sold through over 5.3 million units globally. The number is accurate as of February 8, 2014, and follows closely on the heels of the NPD Group’s recent results. That was when we learned the PS4 had been the top-selling console in the US in January, and Sony followed that up by saying in fact, their system sold “nearly double” the units of the competition (namely, the Xbox One).
Said Sony Computer Entertainment President and Group CEO Andrew House:
“I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season. We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system’s momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation® fans. February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4.”
Given the great potential for the PS4 to sell another million in Japan right out of the gate, it appears Sony’s console can open up a big lead on the Xbox One. If the PS4 can continue to win all major territories, including the US, Microsoft may be struggling to keep up.
But of course, the generation just got started.
