Kicking off the Monday evening’s E3 festivities, Sony was running up against stiff competition from the bombshell Bethesda E3 press conference and the debut of the Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer this past weekend at the Microsoft showcase.
With new games we didn’t know about, as well as killer looks at The Last Of Us 2, Death Stranding, and more, Sony was more than up to the task of standing against their competitors.
All in all, it was a nice little showcase, even if it was marred by some odd jokes and musical segments that seemed to have the audience scratching their heads.
Here’s everything you need to know if you missed the PlayStation E3 live stream!
The Last of Us Part 2
Easily the most-anticipated offering from Sony, the E3 trailer onslaught kicked off with a cut scene finally featuring our first good look at the world — and a badass Ellie.
Giving the audience absolutely whiplash, the trailer went from Ellie kissing a new character named Dina to stabbing a dude in the throat and showing off some insane stealth game play.
There’s some serious brutality this time around, featuring disembowelment, throat slitting, and much more. The environments also seem to be more heavily used and integrated into the game more seamlessly than in the first entry of this award-winning series.
Resident Evil 2 Remake
While we didn’t see anything from that Final Fantasy 7 remake (which reportedly is descending into development hell), we did get a nice long look at the updated rendition of Resident Evil 2.
Featuring the over-the-shoulder look from RE4, it seems like we’re getting an updated story as well when the game lands January 25, 2019.
Call Of Duty: Black Ops III
Yep, you read that correctly — the conference did, in fact, cover the previous Black Ops entry instead of the new one. An odd choice, but there’s good reason for PS+ players.
Remastered renditions of popular maps from earlier in the franchise will be available for Black Ops III if you pre-order the upcoming battle royale entry Black Ops 4. And if you don’t have the previous game? Black Ops III is now a Playstation+ surprise free entry tonight!
Trover Saves The Universe
We didn’t see much of this bizarro platformer, instead getting some rambling from two characters who are very much in the vein of Rick And Morty (which shouldn’t be surprising, as this is from Squanch Games). We’ll have to wait and see what’s in store with the cartoon insanity ahead.
Kingdom Hearts III
Yep, after the first look from Microsoft (and the second same look from Square), we got another glimpse at Jack Sparrow joining Goofy and Sora for pirate adventures in this long, long-overdue sequel.
The number of universes colliding here has absolutely exploded from the older titles. Final Fantasy, Toy Story, Frozen, and more all showing up this time!
A special edition PS4 will launch alongside the game on January 29 and include all the games in the series, including Kingdom Hearts III.
Control
This was a completely unexpected entry that we didn’t have much info about prior to E3. The game appears to be about a woman with telekinetic powers in what is clearly going to be a mind-bending story that gave off a Quantum Break vibe.
Deracine
We knew there would be something VR related at E3 2018 when the Playroom VR dudes made an appearance during the conference’s intro, but we did not expect it to go this direction!
This is set to be an artistic, atmospheric experience totally different than what you’d expect from From Software. Presumably there won’t be nearly as much obnoxious, brutal death this time around.
All we really saw was paintings of wildlife, a house, and some sort of magic flower, so its totally up in the air as to what’s going on here.
Destiny 2
Although there wasn’t any gameplay, we did get a cut scene trailer for Destiny 2’s upcoming Forsaken DLC, which comes September 4 and will include the new Gambit mode. This PvPvE mode will feature both cooperative and competitive elements, so get ready to jump back into the game!
Ghost of Tsushima
E3 was our first game play glimpse at this open world entry set in feudal Japan. There’s a lot of clear influences from different games here that look like they will add up to something unique.
The stealth aspects and an enemy in a stronghold calling for reinforcements gave off a Far Cry/Horizon Zero Dawn flavor, although the action-oriented combat seems brutal and brings to mind Nioh.
Speaking of, Nioh 2 was also officially confirmed, although we saw nothing of the gameplay and just got a little cut scene of a character turning into an oni.
Marvel’s Spider-Man
This slick super hero entry is looking very strongly like an upgraded version of previous game Shattered Dimensions, with a return of the fan-requested web swinging.
The story seems to revolve around a prison break featuring Electro, Rhino, Vulture, Negative Man, and Scorpion, and will showcase strong open world elements with sandbox combat improvisation.
Death Stranding
Hideo Kojima’s messy split with Konami, resulting in the announcement of this Norman Reedus-driven bizarro horror game way back in 2016, has been one of the biggest mysteries of the gaming universe.
Don’t expect any answers, as there are now only more questions, with the trailer featuring a baby in the birth canal. That’s just the beginning of the “delivery” motifs, as gameplay showcased two different characters carting around increasingly huge loads on their backpacks across the game world.
Other than some invisible thing that apparently walks on its hands as an enemy, and dying apparently being part of the gameplay, we probably came away from this trailer more confused than before.
There’s no release date yet, but we do know now that Mads Mikkelson from Hannibal will also be a character.
