Just hours after the PlayStation 2013 site was revealed on Twitter, The Wall Street Journal claims that the PS4 is being announced at the PlayStation Meeting on February 20. What a surprise!
A source “familiar with the matter” spoke to The Wall Street Journal, confirming that the PlayStation 4 will be announced on the 20th. Along with this little leak came tiny bits of information on the hardware being revealed:
- More of a focus on interaction instead of the power-focus they had when developing the PS3.
- No more Cell processor – AMD will be at the PS4’s core.
- Optical drives still intact, instead of switching to all-digital distribution.
- 2013 release.
Whoa nelly! This is some exciting stuff, especially considering the rumors of a brand new controller and a new user interface (though I do like the XMB, don’t get me wrong).
One thing I am worried about is the switch from Cell. Developing for the PlayStation 3 was overly-complicated because of the Cell processor, and all but a few models of the console had to drop PS2 compatibility because of the processor difference (among other things). Will this new console not be backwards-compatible?
Whatever the case, we’ll find out more once the PlayStation Meeting takes place on February 20 at 6:00 PM EST. Time to stew in what we know about the PlayStation 4 so far.
[UPDATE: More PS4 info leaked.]
