Shenmue 3’s record setting Kickstarter campaign was the stuff of legends (nevermind the fact that the series itself is legendary). The game was one-third of Sony’s three headed “melt your heart and make you cry” monster for their E3 Press Conference, but it was unique in the sense that it was the first game to officially launch a Kickstarter campaign on such a huge stage. It was no surprise that the project was funded. What was surprising was how fast it reached its goal, ultimately earning over $6.3 million.
Today, the developers posted their “Month 3 Progress Report” which detailed development on the game’s map testing and came with a nice surprise: a batch of screenshots. Check them out.
Quick take: It’s clear that the series has received a visual upgrade, and that’s no surprise since it’s been almost two full console generations since Shenmue 2 came out. To be fair, if this is about what we can expect the game to look like, it won’t be winning any awards for best visuals. Regardless, it’s nice to catch a glimpse of a game that has eluded its fans for so many years.
