The Seas be ours and by the Powers
Where we will, we’ll roam
We learned a few things about protagonist Edward Kenway when the Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag trailer leaked in early March. He flies around pirate ships and seas like a cat on steroids. He makes fanboys out of grizzled greybeards and swarthy captains alike. And he’s quite at home giving a share of his pirate’s booty to nubile ladies of many an ethnic persuasion.
Nobody batted an eye at this last when the trailer hit the internet. Naked women, ah yes, perfectly reasonable. And forgettable too, surely. Marketing gimmick; it all makes sense. As it turns out, it looks like they actually play a legitimate part in the upcoming AC title’s storyline. Who’d a thunk it?
No more the storylines fighting Templars and assassinations. Lead scriptwriter Darby McDevitt says that Black Flag’s storyline will revolve around sex and repentance:
”Edward Kenway is a raucous and bawdy chap, but he’s also a married man, and one of his primary motivation in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is to get rich and prove himself a ‘man of quality’ to his family and betters. So there is a special woman in Edward’s life, but there are also other not-so-special women as well.”
Special she may be, but it looks like things are tense between married man Edward and his wife. Looks like his other lady friends are doing their part in straining the relationship. Now I wonder why that would be? Every woman wants their man coming home from ‘sea’ smelling of whorehouse, no?
This also begs the question of whether or not one of the women in the trailer is Edward’s so special wife. The woman on the street, perhaps, who was walking along pretty as you please talking to some unknown gentleman before Edward comes up behind, stabs him in the street, and drags her off by the arm.
That’s like romance, right?
If this news has gotten you worried, don’t be so quick to dismiss this newest installment as a mire of domestic drama. McDevitt isn’t as talkative about the Templars in Black Flag, but does assure fans that the Templars from three different empires will be making an appearance.
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is planned for release on October 29th.
