If you were looking forward to the SMITE spinoff game called SMITE Rivals, then I have some bad news for you. Hi-Rez Studios, the creators behind the mobile brawler game, decided to put its development on hold for the time being.
Stew Chisam, the President of Hi-Rez, stated in a Tweet that the game has been put on hold so that the development team can focus better on SMITE Tactics:
“We made a decision this week to put SMITE Rivals on hold. While we are still excited by the general concept of SMITE Rivals, it was clear after early testing that the game needs significant additional development before releasing. With SMITE Tactics, our turn-based strategy game set in the SMITE Universe, performing well, we have decided to focus our energies on that for the time being.”
It remains to be seen whether the phrase “on hold” means that the game has been outright cancelled, or if the development team is just waiting for SMITE Tactics to be finished. It’s unclear how much of the game was completed before being put “on hold”, and even more unclear how much more needed to be done to it for it to be released. Only time will tell now.
