Sony Clarifies PlayStation 5 Backwards Compatibility

We might be playing more PS4 games on the PS5 after all.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Earlier this week, we got what some might call a “glimpse” at what the PlayStation 5 is capable of, but backwards compatibility was a bit unclear at the time. Now, Sony has updated its official PS5 event overview to clarify what PlayStation 4 games can be played on the PlayStation 5 — sort of.

The update reads:

We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.

We have already tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more as we move toward launch. We will provide updates on backward compatibility, along with much more PS5 news, in the months ahead.

During the presentation earlier this week, Mark Cerny suggested Sony prioritized the top 100 PS4 games for PS5 backwards compatibility. The phrasing naturally left many thinking the PS5’s backwards compatibility would be staggered like the Xbox One’s was. However, it seems that’s not the case.

The update also says:

We’re expecting backward compatible titles will run at a boosted frequency on PS5 so that they can benefit from higher or more stable frame rates and potentially higher resolutions.

We’re currently evaluating games on a title-by-title basis to spot any issues that need adjustment from the original software developers.

Basically, it sounds like while some PS4 titles won’t run very well on the PS5 without adjustments, that’s not the case with all of them.

Either way, we can hopefully look forward to playing most of our PS4 games once the PS5 launches — and apparently, those rumors of more extensive compatibility were false.
