You can count Sony out on attending Gamescom this year, as they just released a statement saying that they will not be going, and instead holding an international media briefing at Paris Games week. Paris Games week is on October 27th, while Gamescom is occurring from August 5th to the 9th. Sony believes that this will give them a bit more time for the bigger announcements later in the year.
“With the changes this year of E3 taking place a week later and Gamescom taking place earlier, we feel that both PlayStation and the wider industry would benefit from a major news milestone later in the year, during the most important period for gaming.”
Even though Sony has attended every Gamescom since its initial debut in 2009, most fans are not worried about missing out this year. In fact a poll held on PushSquare, a blog for Sony and its Playstation franchise, has most fans not worried at all about the absence, and saying that the conference held in Paris Week will be just as good.
With that said, we will be seeing both Microsoft and Nintendo at Gamescom. Xbox’s Phil Spencer recently pledged himself into being there after answering a few fans on Twitter, as he also acknowledged the absence of Sony.
@VernAtXboxUncut @iamironwolf Sure, we think GC is an important conference for us. One of the biggest game shows in the world.

@RMDXBOX I saw that news. Makes sense, E3 and GC are very close this year, more challenging on news. Paris show is a good show.

Gamescom has been a pretty big event for the PlayStation franchise, as there are usually multiple release trailers for upcoming exclusives during the time. Their newest console, the PlayStation 4, was also given a release date during a past Gamescom event.
Although fans will miss the big powerhouse being there in Germany, we will all be looking forward to what Sony announces on October 27th in Paris.
