Spelunky 2 is already out on PlayStation 4, and it includes a strong suite of multiplayer modes and options, including four-player local and online co op, as well as a PvP Arena mode.
The PC version of the game will release on September 29, a full two weeks after its console counterpart. Though the single-player and local multiplayer experience will be the same and remain intact, the online multiplayer features will be missing at launch.
An announcement by developer Mossmouth in the game’s Steam Community Hub said that multiplayer is being delayed to “prioritize an earlier release” for the game on PC.
Regarding our release date, we listened to the community’s feedback and decided to prioritize an earlier release so that Steam players could enjoy the game ASAP.
Unfortunately, that means we won’t be able to launch with online multiplayer and we’ll be provisionally removing the “Online Co-op” tag from the store, so as not to mislead people. Sorry, we know that’s disappointing for players who were excited to jump right into online co-op on day one. Until very recently we were still hoping that we would be able to launch with it as planned.
Mossmouth said that the online multiplayer component shouldn’t be far off, though; they hope to have it completed in “a few weeks” and release it alongside crossplay functionality for PC and PS4.
