Celebrating the 30 year anniversary of Dragon Quest, Square Enix held a press conference in Japan today. They touted it as a Dragon Quest themed conference and fans suspected that they would finally be receiving an update on the next entry in the franchise. Surely a Dragon Quest-themed conference would include news on Dragon Quest XI right?
Apparently not.
Square Enix – master trolls that they are – announced right at the beginning, after everyone was there, that there would be no new information regarding DragonQuest XI. People were disappointed, to say the least.
Really, though, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Square Enix has done this before. Remember 2014s PlayStation Experience keynote? Before the actual remake was announced at E3 2015, Shinji Hashimoto came out on stage for PlayStation and started talking about Final Fantasy VII. He got everyone all excited about FF7 on the PS4 only to show a trailer of the original. Turns out it was just a port. Classic Square Enix.
They pulled another fast one at their own E3 press conference too! They said they were going to be talking about Kingdom Hearts, and the trailer started up only for it to be a mobile game called Kingdom Hearts Unchained. They did end up showing Kingdom Hearts III gameplay, but Square couldn’t help themselves from messing with their fans.
So what did Square talk about during the conference? Well, they announced a demo for Dragon Quest Builders, a card battle game, and that Dragon Quest Heroes II goes on sale May 27. As an added bonus, they did say they hope to release Dragon Quest XI between May 27, 2016, and May 27, 2017, but who knows. I wonder how Square will troll fans next, maybe they’ll announce a new Secret of Mana game but then reveal it’s actually a dating sim. Wouldn’t that be hilarious?
