Stan Lee, the charming and brilliant mind behind countless iconic Marvel characters, has never been particularly camera shy. As Marvel’s Cinematic Universe expands at a staggering rate, Lee himself is stepping out of his Executive Producer chair and onto the set more and more often, making short, but memorable cameos on-screen. Keeping an eye out for his appearances has become such a fan-favorite part of the viewing experience that it’s bizarre for him not to show up. To date, Lee has acted in 23 live-action Marvel films, starting with 1989’s Trial of the Incredible Hulk and most recently ending up in the summer blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron. He’s not just sticking to movies, though. Stan Lee’s most recent cameo is in LEGO Marvel’s Avengers as a playable character.
Amidst lots of new information on LEGO Avengers’ new features and gameplay mechanics, Marvel’s Comic Con panelists revealed a handful of surprise characters on their hefty 150+ roster. While Captain America-clad Falcon, costumed Crossbones, and A-Force’s America Chavez are all exciting editions, the true star of the showcase was Stan Lee in fully-functioning battle armor. “Iron Stan” seems highly reminiscent of Iron Man, appearing to borrow all of his gameplay functions. Fittingly, this comes with a Hulkbuster-inspired upgrade known as the “Stanbuster,” equipped with tinted glasses, a button down, and a giant mounted pencil gun.
This will be Stan Lee’s second appearance in all of his LEGO glory, the first of which was LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. As the creator of most of the game’s characters, Lee comes equipped with at least half of their powers, including web-slinging, telekinesis, and “Excelsior Hulk” mode. Whether or not Iron Stan will be limited to just Iron Man’s tech and abilities in Avengers remains to be seen.
LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is set for release this winter.
