As of today, BioWare and Lucasfilm Ltd. have announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic‘s newest expansion – Knights of the Fallen Empire – has officially launched. The free digital expansion aims to provide players with a new storyline that feels more like the BioWare-style storytelling players have been asking for since the base game originally launched in 2011.
According to an official press release, players will be able to adventure to new planets in the galaxy’s outer rim. There they will be able to recruit new companions, make new and exciting choices in a new fully developed storyline that revolves around a powerful new enemy – The Immortal Emperor, Valkorion. The initial launch of Knights of the Fallen Empire will include the first of nine chapters of a player-driven storyline that will receive new chapters episodically, similar to games such as Telltale’s The Walking Dead or Dontnod Entertainment’s Life is Strange.
The writing found in this trailer for Knights of the Fallen Empire certainly feels more like it did in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
It should be noted that the expansion also includes a free level 60 character that will allow players to quickly jump into the new storyline. However, EA and BioWare are also hoping that this new expansion will draw in new players who will get the best experience out of various modifications to story elements to make the game feel more player-driven. Also, a new level-sync system has been added to various pre-level 50 story missions to ensure that players feel more engaged during gameplay.
Hopefully, Knights of the Fallen Empire will be able to please fans as much as BioWare is hoping. Ever since its launch, Star Wars: The Old Republic has suffered in user reviews, earning a 5.9/10 in user reviews on Metacritic despite its overwhelming success with critics. Only time will tell if this new expansion will have players eager to meet their destiny against the Empire of Zakuul, or if fans will still clamor to the hope that BioWare will one day wash their hands of this game and finally develop a third title for the Knights of the Old Republic series.
