Terraria: Otherworld was just announced today as a brand new game that explores new directions of the action-sandbox gameplay that was so well-received by consumers of their previous game, Terraria.
Along with the beautiful teaser trailer above, Re-Logic and Engine Software have launched an official site and shared some more in-depth thoughts with Terraria fans on their forums.
“Set in an alternate dimension within the Terraria universe, Terraria: Otherworld places the player in a life-and-death struggle to restore a once-pristine world – now overrun by a malevolent force that has corrupted nature itself – to its original splendor.
“Combining elements of sandbox gameplay with role-playing and strategy elements, Terraria: Otherworld explores the Terraria experience in an innovative and unique way – providing a fresh approach to the “open world” genre.”
Aside from this short and ambitious description, we know very little about the actual game. Re-Logic and Engine Software will both be attending the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco this March to showcase Terraria: Otherworld and open up the floor for Q&A.
“Terraria: Otherworld explores the Terraria experience in an innovative and unique way – providing a fresh approach to the “open world” genre.”
Terraria: Otherworld is in development for PC & Mac platforms—and currently being considered for PS4 and Xbox One but they have no final word on that as of yet—with no release date in site. The game is currently in early alpha and still has quite a bit of work to do on it. Terraria originally refused to come out on Early Access for a long time, so it’s fully possibly that gamers will not be able to get their hands on Terraria: Otherworld until its full release. Probably for the best, too.
We will see how they plan to change-up the open world genre come March.
