What does a game company do when their newest spin-off franchise barely manages to get a 47 on Metacritic? According to Sega, release a sequel.

Today the Nintendo’s YouTube channel released an announcement trailer for Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice (above). The video provides one minute of gameplay footage for Sonic’s next adventure in the Sonic Boom universe. The video highlights the game’s new mechanic involving – you guessed it – fire and ice. From what is visible in the footage it seems that fire will be used primarily to destroy stage obstacles while ice will create new paths for characters to cross. Also new to the 3DS version of Sonic Boom is Amy Rose as a member of the playable roster, an addition that should please… somebody.

The game is already receiving some flak from fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog series as the YouTube video’s comments section is now filled with posts mocking the game’s headline “What do you get when you mix fire and water?”, while others speculate on what has possessed Sega to greenlight a new Sonic Boom game.

While a release date has not been announced as of yet for Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice, it is likely a game that devoted fans will skip over considering the relatively new spin-off franchise’s notorious of glitches and poor sales. With fans begging for a new Sonic title that does not disappoint, only time will tell if Sega’s latest Sonic title will drown the Blue Blur once and for all.
