Slated to come out on November 22nd of this year for the Nintendo 3DS (and now the Nintendo 2DS), The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds had its box art revealed today and boy is it pretty. In the upper right hand corner however, you can see the Nintendo Network label which means the game will have some sort of internet capability.
While there are no details on what the game might use an internet connection for, there are several things that wouldn’t be out of the ordinary: one being additional downloadable content. Nintendo could add extra bonus dungeons or side quests to the game via free or paid DLC.
I wonder if the cartridge will be gold as well?
But the one thing I hope they use the Nintendo Network for is the return of the Four Swords mini game. Originally released on the GBA re-release of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Four Swords was a multiplayer game you could play with up to three other friends via the Game Boy Advance link cable.
You and your friends would go through three different areas fighting monsters and solving puzzles together while at the same time competing against each other to try to get the most rupees at the end.
Upon completion of the Four Swords storyline, a new dungeon opened up in the main game where you could challenge yourself to see if you could survive.
Four Swords was also later made into its own game for the Nintendo GameCube, titled Four Swords Adventures. Also, as a way of celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series, the Four Swords mini game was re-released in a single-player version as a free download for DSi and 3DS users from September 2011 to February 2012.
It would be nice to see if they came out with a new rendition and continuation of the Four Swords storyline complete with new puzzles and online play. It would certainly make it easier to find people to play with, that’s for sure. But only time will tell and all will be revealed come November 22nd.
