Limit Break!!!
Sorry just had to get that out! Square Enix announced the official launch trailer for Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward and it looks like the upcoming expansion is going to have a pretty crazy plot.
Old-School Adventure!
The trailer starts giving us a small sample of the lore as the origins of the Dragonsong War are told. As the trailer goes on, we are taken through the expansion’s various dungeons and see some of the new abilities. Dark Knights slash through enemies as machinists unload clip after clip. Towers crumble as the warriors traverse a crumbling castle coated with purple crystals. Ninjas backflipping off of bird…dragon things!
Intense Boss Battles!
Turns out the Heavensward’s latest primal – Ravana, Fourfold Master of the Blade, not only has a menacing buzzy voice, but his two dual-katanas also turn into two giant light sabers! He’s also a great dancer. Check out that spin-move! And the other new one, Bismark looks super majestic…until he rolls over and swallows you like Monstro.
There’s a storm a-brewing in those skies
On the more spoiler-y side of things (this is a warning. You have been warned). It looks like our old friend Raubahn is doing much better, although it doesn’t look like his arm grew back just yet. And crystals be praised we got our light back! You know what that means? LIMIT BREAKS! (Not saying this is how the actual story is going to be buuuut…)
One of the new additions to Heavensward were individual limit breaks for the jobs and boy do they look potent! Dragoons summon the spirit of a dragon and blows up their foes. Dark Knights drench their opponents in dark ooze. Scholars summon some kind of super fairy, while Warriors summon molten walls to protect their allies. Bards will be happy to know that their limit break is no longer a healing spell. Taking a bow while raining hell on your enemies was a very nice touch.
What a Twist!
What really interests me is the ending. It looks like the Warriors of Light are in for a fight. Up until now the Ascians, the antagonists of the game, have been mostly a mystery. What kind of dark secrets do they hide? Who or what are the “Warriors of Darkness”? A new boss? A new raid? Possible PVP? Guess we’ll have to play to find out!
Heavensward launches on June 23rd, 2015, with early access starting on the 19th. The game is available for PS4, PS3, and PC. A Mac version is in development but won’t be available until later this year. The dev team for the game has a booth at E3 and a live stream is set for June 16th, 2015 at 7:30 (PDT).
