Kevin Bruner, CEO of Telltale Games, confirmed the news to Mashable in an interview. Though no story details were mentioned, he goes on to discuss how the series plans to take an “unexpected” direction with the new season.

“From a role-playing, interactive storytelling point of view, it is not from the bag of tricks that we’ve ever shown anybody before. The way that we’re dealing with and validating and retaining all those different playthroughs is really cool and unexpected and, I think, pretty innovative from the storytelling point of view.”

Bruner also confirms that choices players made in previous seasons of the series will carry on to the third, with a specific “strategy” in mind to help returning players.

“We’ve got a strategy to help Season 3 players … collect all their data from the previous games. [W]e didn’t have the cloud services in Season 1 that we have now, so we’re going to have a solution for everybody that we’re not talking about it yet.”

Telltale’s most recent foray into the world of The Walking Dead centered around fan-favorite character Michonne in a miniseries exploring the events of her departure from Rick Grimes’ group of survivors, as depicted in the comic universe. The second episode is set to debut March 29th.

The Walking Dead released to rave reviews in 2012, kickstarting Telltale’s success in licensed narrative games. Since then, the company has produced titles for the likes of Game of Thrones, Minecraft, and more recently Batman
