The Witcher 3 Dev: “We Populate the World With Adventure”

The Witcher 3 won't just be massive, it'll also be full of intrigue.

Most gamers don’t play huge open-world games for the stories. That’s because it’s difficult to keep track of one cohesive storyline when you spend so much time adventuring.

However, developer CD Projekt RED promises that despite the gargantuan size of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we can still expect compelling stories and intriguing characters. During a recent OPM preview, gameplay designer Maciej Szczesnik discussed the game’s Slavic origins, and how that relates to each narrative:

“We fill each region with stories that are just around every corner. It’s something very characteristic to Slavic mythology that partially inspires the game. In Slavic mythos, you don’t need to venture to far away lands to experience adventures – something really amazing can live in a nearby forest or hide deep in the cave you pass by when you travel. We populate the world with adventure and this glues everything together.”

That sounds good to me, especially the “populating the world with adventure” part. This is a huge project and when a developer shoots for the stars, there are numerous potential pitfalls. Still, these guys have the chops to handle it (I think) and provided the gameplay mechanic is sound, and provided they give us those great side stories, we should be good to go.

This game is gonna be big… really, REALLY big

If you haven’t done the research on this one yet, do it. You’ll be shocked at what CD Projekt RED is planning. This game is supposed to be 20 percent larger than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, for example. They’re also saying it’ll be deeper in just about every way, and they swear we’ll have more of a story/plot influence. I can’t imagine how they’re going to pull all this off but if they do, oh dear Lord.

The only problem will be finding the requisite time to play it.
