Sky plc, the largest media distributor in the United Kingdom, announced that they will soon begin broadcasting a channel called Ginx esports TV. Ginx TV will be a 24-hour channel which that provides esports content exclusively, focusing on tournament coverage of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, and their own original content.
Sky plc isn’t the only broadcasting company that has seen the potential profit of attempting to reach out to the gaming community. ESPN has been focusing on developing their own esports coverage in order to make competitive gaming more accessible to those who have possibly never tuned into an event before.
With the popularity of streaming on platforms like Twitch growing at exponential rates, Sky plc might be a little late to the party when it comes to taking advantage of the large amounts of gamers who tune into streams of their favorite titles.
TV just doesn’t seem as if it will be the next big step for esports coverage. If an individual doesn’t play video games already, they probably won’t be inclined to tune into a channel devoted to esports, and watching video game coverage on a phone or computer is arguably a more convenient way to take in media.
