We almost got a transforming Arwing amiibo

How cool would it be to have a transforming amiibo? Well we were really close to finding out.

With Star Fox Zero set to release April 21 of this year, Nintendo told us that Falco and Fox’s Super Smash Bros. amiibos were the only ones that were going to be compatible with the new game. We now know that we could have had a third amiibo: a transforming Arwing.

This special amiibo would have transformed between the Arwing and a walker version, but Nintendo was unable to get the final product up to snuff. Shigeru Miyamoto had this to say:

“We were working on a couple of ideas for the game for well over a year. There was one point where we had an Arwing amiibo that would transform into the walker. But it was really tough to execute that in the normal amiibo size and in a way that met with product-safety standards. We had to give up on it. For now, it’s only going to work with Fox and Falco from the Super Smash Bros. series.”

While Nintendo won’t be making a transforming Arwing amiibo, Mr. Miyamoto would still like to make it a reality, but perhaps not in amiibo form.

For now, I suppose we’ll just have to be satisfied with Falco and Fox. At least, Fox unlocks the classic SNES-style Arwing. This will come with themed lasers, bombs, and Corneria music from the original Star Fox game, so that’s pretty cool.

What do you guys think? Would you buy a transforming Arwing? I know I would.
