The group behind the Homebrew Channel has announced that it works on the Wii U, providing the console is in Wii mode. Users can install and use the channel just as they would on a regular Wii.
While the intent behind the Homebrew Channel is to allow for the playing of homebrew games, it’s most often used to play pirated games on the console. This is terrible news for the Wii U, considering the high rate of piracy on its predecessor and Nintendo’s inability to effectively stop it.
To be honest, this is just another piece of bad news to add to the pile for early adopters.
The Wii U has had a rocky start, with lower than expected sales and lots of criticism about the power of the console. The Homebrew Channel is the first step to cracking the console as a whole, meaning the Wii U may be a bed of piracy sooner than consumers — and Nintendo — expected.
