Will Naughty Dog keep Uncharted 4 below 60fps?

Naughty Dog won't be setting Uncharted 4 at 60fps on PS4 if it hinders the gameplay experience.

Everybody expects Uncharted 4 to run at full strength on PS4, but Naughty Dog won’t force it if it ruins the experience.

Over 15 minutes of gameplay footage of the latest chapter in the Uncharted series was shown at last month’s PlayStation Experience. What was quickly dissected was the frame rate, which was running at 30fps and not 60fps.

The developer confirmed in the latest issue of EDGE magazine that they locked the Uncharted 4 demo at 30fps for stability. Bruce Straley, the game’s director, said it was actually running over that amount and the magazine confirmed the claim. He also said that they won’t be compromising the gameplay for a faster frame rate (quote via Video Gamer).

“We’re going to do whatever it takes to make the game we want to make. If it means we could go for 60 but lose something that would really impact the player’s experience, then it’s our choice as developers to say, ‘Well, we’re going to go for the experience over the 60 frames.'”

There’s a certain expectation for all games to run at 60fps on the current generation systems. Naughty Dog has said in the past that will be their goal for all future releases on PS4. They’ve already reached the 1080p, 60fps marks with the re-release of The Last of Us.

How important is running at 60fps?

It’s all a matter of opinion and genre when it comes to frames per second. Some people prefer 30fps for a cinematic feel, and developers can add more detail at that rate. In an adventure game like Uncharted, 30fps would be acceptable, whereas a fast-paced shooter would thrive at a higher frame rate. It’s not like the previous three Uncharted games were tarnished because of the 30fps frame rate, and I wouldn’t expect the next edition to suffer much, even on the new console.

What are your thoughts on the potential of Uncharted 4 to run at just 30fps on the PS4?
