Will Sonic Drive 2DS Sales?

Nintendo seems to be putting a lot of faith into Sonic. Think it will work in their favor?

Nintendo is saying that Sonic the Hedgehog is their ticket to more 2DS sales. Sonic: Lost World is one of three exclusive Sonic games for Nintendo’s platforms. It released on 2DS, 3DS and Wii U last week.

Sonic’s kid-friendly appeal is said to help sell the pretty affordable handheld. Sonic has always reminded me of my childhood so I think this is a very sound plan, not that one game can keep a handheld afloat–unless you’re Pokémon.

“There is a lot of opportunity to engage with the younger audience on Sonic with the new entry-level Nintendo 2DS console. From launch to post launch we’ll be focused on kids,” said Dani Robinson, Nintendo product manager.

I think this approach could work for Nintendo. The 2DS could be something new for the younger generations to hold onto.

“Peak season this year is without doubt a big celebration of Nintendo franchises and Sonic sits high on every platform gamers list of ‘must play’ titles.”

Sonic: Lost World has been marketed very well. Ads were placed during the cinema release for Turbo 3D and Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2. On October 13th, an additional TV campaign on Nickelodeon, Disney and Boomerang specifically targeting children kicked off.

Do you think this will work in Nintendo’s favor? Do you think Sonic: Lost World will be as popular with children as they think?
