Windows 10 will be free if you are currently running Microsoft Windows 7 or higher on your desktop, laptop, or mobile phone. This is straight from the open window itself as stated on their Windows 10 website. It was announced earlier this week that Windows would be offering their new Operating System to any and all customers who are currently running a recent (7+) version; this includes non-genuine copies.
As it stands Windows in its many forms currently dominate at least 91% of totally market share with 70% divided up between Windows 7, 8, & 8.1. While this may seem like a total domination over the OS market we can’t forget that 19% of those users are still using XP and even those who are using 7+ aren’t all on the same ship.
This OS disparity has made keeping a consistent user experience even more difficult for the tech giant, especially when you consider the unique computer set ups from user to user.
It stands to reason that Microsoft would want to bring as many users as possible up to date on the same version. This includes non-genuine copies as it has been rumored that even if they get the update, it doesn’t automatically validate their copy. This could prove to be a great move on Window’s part though to convert some wayward consumers so long as they continue to maintain their rejection of a subscription model for the OS.
Windows 10 is scheduled to be available this summer, but only time will tell if this new strategy will smooth out the wrinkles in Microsoft’s OS user base.
