Despite a rumor that Windows 8 was selling below expectations, it seems that it’s actually doing quite well. Microsoft has announced that their newest operating system has sold 40 million licenses so far.
Windows 8 launched on October 26 and has sold 40 million within a month. This is even faster than Windows 7, which sold 60 million licenses in ten weeks. It’s surprising to see 8 grow so much faster considering all of the bad Juju surrounding the OS.
But..
Microsoft has not released any other information behind the sales numbers. NDTV Gadgets brings up a good point: most of the sales were made to PC manufacturers. This means that the vast majority of the licenses sold are not actually in use yet, as manufacturers need to roll out the systems with the OS installed.
StatCounter, a tech research firm, claims that Windows 8 is currently being used by 15 million people. This is a far cry from the 1.5 billion PCs used worldwide, but Windows 8 is new to the industry. We’ll see where they sit this time next year.
