It’s difficult to imagine how something that was simply breathtaking when it first came out could be improved. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, when first released on Nintendo’s Game Cube ten years ago, met unanimous acclaim especially for its luscious art style, picking up two awards just for its design.

To celebrate a full decade of it having a fond place not only in the franchise but in the hearts of many players, many are excited about its HD rerelease, which hits stores tomorrow (October 4th 2013).

A few weeks ago, we really pawed over the value of HD remastering in an article and on our round-table discussion. But the feedback from press and players at various expos has been one of sheer astonishment at just how much more fantastic it looks on the Wii U. Furthermore, Nintendo have thrown in a few surprises, not just in how the game will utilise the handheld component of the Wii U, but also in additional gameplay options, and the packaging itself, pulling out all the stops and making this a landmark release.

Black And Gold

The physical game itself will come wrapped in gold foil, making this a wonderful little luxury that will certainly please collectors as well as gamers. This is a good reason to go out and get the physical game tomorrow rather than buy the already available eShop copy – unless you really want to play it right now.

Nintendo are also offering a limited edition “premium” Wii U bundle, which features the game, plus a black console complete with gold Hyrulean detailing on the handheld device, and a digital copy of Hyrule Historia which will make you the envy of any The Legend of Zelda fanatic, for just $299.99 (£249.99).

I Need a Hero!

As well as improving the graphics and introducing the handheld to the gameplay, Nintendo have also added a “Hero Mode” to challenge players further: enemies will deal double damage and there will be no recovery hearts to collect in the heat of battle. Older players who grew up with the title will no doubt welcome the additional challenge, as well as adding extra repeatability for those experiencing it for the first time.

There are also other various gameplay tweaks such as streamlined Triforce collection, and the option to make those laborious journeys between islands a little quicker.

All in all, Nintendo have made a very loving and well thought out remastering of a cherished game, rather than just a lazy polish to make more money. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD is set to literally strike gold with fans around the world.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, is released internationally on October 4th 2013. Please visit your local retailer for details.
