Microsoft came under heavy fire this week at Game Developers Conference. The folks at Microsoft hired scantly-clad women to dance and socialize with the event goers at the event’s after party. Because of instances like this that have occurred in the past, many have scrutinized the company for their “blatant sexualization of women” in order to sell their products.
Xbox head, Phil Spencer, made a statement in response to these events:
“How we show up as an organization is incredibly important to me. We want to build and reflect the culture of TEAM XBOX – internally and externally – a culture that each one of us can represent with pride. An inclusive culture has a direct impact on the products and services we deliver and the perception consumers have of the Xbox brand and our company, as a whole.”
You can read his whole statement here.
He goes onto say that instances like these will not be tolerated and will be dealt with accordingly. This isn’t the first time Microsoft or the gaming community as a whole have been criticized for their lack of inclusiveness or sexist actions.
What do you think of Spencer’s statement and sexism in the gaming community? Let me know in the comments below!
