Xbox One Headed for an All Digital Future?

According to an interview with Gamespot at PAX Prime 2013, Microsoft’s Xbox Director Albert Penello declares a return to a digital-only future is inevitable and will happen eventually. Penello states:

“Yeah. It’s going to happen. I don’t think there’s anybody in the industry; no matter what you thought about our original policies around DRM; I don’t think there’s anybody that doesn’t know that someday, it’s going to happen.”

As you probably have heard, Microsoft is going to keep disc-based sharing for the time being since the backlash against the technology giant caused a reverse in official policy and functionality for the Xbox One. This move led many to label the Xbox One as the “Xbox 180” and has caused a rift in the gaming community on whether to support it or put money on the PlayStation 4.

My Thoughts:

A digital future is inevitable, but I find it rather strange that people would still trust Microsoft after its recent controversies. I am one who will not be getting an Xbox One because of my lack of trust in the Xbox Team to deliver what they promise. They have given into public demand not for the sake of appeasing customers, but to save their console from a failed launch. And now that Penello is implying a return to the original plan, my distrust is even more solidified. I predict a tragic end of the Xbox brand unless it can become a separate entity and not connected to Microsoft, but that is another story for another time.
