Like a pendulum swinging, or an intense basketball game, the proverbial tug of war between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One continues with the Xbox One taking the lead yet again. (Gotta love analogies!) According to MCVUK, the Xbox One has surpassed the PS4 again in Amazon pre-orders after being put in second place by Sony’s console in the aftermath of last week’s E3. This news comes a day after Microsoft, in a letter to consumers, announced that it will get rid of the previously required 24-hour online check-in, fully support used disc based games, and eliminate disc based games from being tied to a person’s Xbox Live account.
Microsoft was in a bit of a rough spot after its poor E3 showing. Its message of an always online future was not clearly explained to consumers which led many to cancel their Xbox One pre-orders, and some to switch to the PS4. This was compounded by the awful PR strategy that Microsoft employees found themselves implementing, like telling soldiers and those without internet to stick with the 360 instead of purchasing the new console.
With the Xbox One taking the lead on Amazon, it will be interesting to see if Sony delivers another punch to Microsoft as the next-gen console war continues. Sony could go a long way if it were to announce more benefits for PS+ subscribers or establish that it has better hardware, which means better looking games. For now though it seems that, at least in pre-order numbers, Xbox One has the ball in its court. Let’s see what moves the PS4 can make to regain the lead.
