Tumblr wasn’t the only big purchase Yahoo! made within the past few weeks; they also acquired a lesser known company called PlayerScale.
PlayerScale is a company that develops infrastructure that allows companies to easily allow publishers to create cross-platform gaming. Based on some information from their website the company has been growing pretty steadily since its conception in 2011.
**This company essentially came out of thin air**
What is Yahoo! Up To?
Yahoo! is aging. It isn’t often that we hear someone under the age of 3,000 say, “my e-mail is [email protected],” so it seems to me as though they’re trying desperately to remain relevant in the new-fangled Internet age. Enter Tumblr, an incredibly marketable and popular site that allows anyone to say whatever they want to in a very public forum. It is a logical step for Yahoo! to spend $1.1 billion on acquiring Tumblr to effectively stave off the digital vultures circling their dehydrated digital presence.
The acquisition of PlayerScale is more of a mystery. Yahoo! did this very much under the radar. It was fairly unpublicized and aside from a note on PlayerScale’s website, the Internet has been fairly quiet about it.
Perhaps Yahoo! is trying to get a finger in the gaming business. If the PlayrScale website is accurate and they’re growing as rapidly as they say, then it could be a great idea for Yahoo! to test the waters with a foray into game publishing. Who knows? Maybe we’ll see a screen that says “Published by Yahoo! Games” sometime in the future. Or maybe Yahoo! is just looking for a new stream of revenue.
What do you think Yahoo! has up its sleeve? Do you think they’ll enter the foray into gaming in the near future, or are they just attempting to open new doors in the ever-present struggle for relevance? Sound off in the comments and maybe I’ll like, like you, instead of just liking you.
