Hyperkin, a video game accessory maker, joke-announced for April Fool’s that they would be releasing an accessory for your smartphone that would turn it into a Gameboy Color.
They later wrote on their Facebook about how it was, in fact, an April Fool’s joke but said it had a bigger reason as well. They wanted to test the market if the Smart Boy would in fact be something that they could develop:
“A lot of you were speculating that the Smart Boy is an April fool’s joke. Well, it sort of was, we leaked it with the initial intent of testing the market, seeing whether or not it should be something we’d actually make, under the guise of the April fool’s joke. Looks like you awesome folks ACTUALLY WANT IT, so the Smart Boy is now in development. Thank you all for your enthusiastic responses!”
The concept is that the “Smart Boy” accessory would plug into your iPhone 6 Plus and on other smartphones in the future. The adaptor would allow you to play Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. The Smart Boy would have the standard set of buttons, and your phone screen would display the game. It has a built-in battery that can be charged by the phone and gameplay is said to last 5 hours.
Of course, when the adapter is released it may not look or function like the original announcement specified some features may change.
