Eiji Aonuma, the producer of The Legend of Zelda, has been exclusively involved with the series since 1998’s Ocarina of Time. His directorial work on entries like Majora’s Mask, The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, and his passion for the series, remains strong nearly twenty years later.
But is it time for him to try something new?
According to a new interview with EDGE, Aonuma is conflicted on the matter, and he’s not alone; Nintendo’s top-brass can’t decide either. He states:
“Actually, Nintendo has been telling me to create a new IP. But then, they’re also telling me to make more Zelda games. I can’t really share much; I’m not sure I’m allowed to say anything. But I really like the idea of a game where I can live as a thief. That’s all I’ll say.”
It’s worth remembering that as of now, Aonuma is hard at work on the latest Zelda iteration — Breath of the Wild — for Wii U and NX. While he’s bound to secrecy, his idea of a thief game would break new ground for Nintendo. Whether or not he’ll actually make it remains to be seen, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled.
