Xbox One S is not necessary

While the Xbox One S looks like a great addition to the Xbox console family, it isn't necessary.
This article is over 8 years old and may contain outdated information

I’ve been an owner of the Xbox One since day one. In fact, I have the Day One edition console with the special controller to prove it. I’ve been a huge fan of Xbox and Microsoft for a long time, and I always want the newest edition of their Xbox products… except this one. Sure the new Xbox One S looks nice and shiny with its smaller size and 4K abilities, but it is unnecessary if you have the original Xbox One.

4K or not to 4K

To start off, not many people have a 4K television or monitor. Only 10% of homes in the United States will own a 4K television by the end of 2016. This is due to them being rather new in the television market along with an increased price tag compared to other televisions.

Also, Xbox team member Mike Ybarra revealed on Twitter that Xbox One games won’t run naturally at 4K, but they will be upscaled to 4K. True 4K games probably won’t become the standard until Xbox Scorpio arrives next year. Getting the new Xbox One S in August when it is supposed to release will not be worth it due to the lack of true 4K gaming.

Size Doesn’t Matter

It is true that the new Xbox One S is 40% smaller than the original Xbox One. If you already own one, has the size been a big factor to you? My Xbox has traveled with me from New Jersey to Florida and then to Arizona; I’ve never had a problem finding a spot for it due to its big size. Even with the power supply being built into the console — for the first time since the Xbox Original — I won’t buy a new Xbox One just for that.

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase ‘Size doesn’t matter.’ It works for the Xbox One S too.

Storage is Cheap

The first Xbox One S to hit the store shelves is the 2 terabyte version that will retail for $400. If you started this new generation and went all digital with your games, you know that storage is very important. Here’s the thing, you can easily go on Amazon and buy more storage for cheaper than getting a new Xbox One. Just buy the external hard drive and plug it into the Xbox One and you will automatically add that extra storage — a feature which I have not seen on other consoles.

Now is the time to buy!

If you don’t own an Xbox One and you’re looking to buy one, buy the original Xbox One. With the new console coming out next month, there are amazing deals on the original Xbox One. For example, the Xbox One Spring Bundle is only $300, and you get:

  • The 1 terabyte console
  • An extra controller
  • Halo 5, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Rare Replay, Ori and the Blind Forest, plus an additional game of your choice.
  • $50 Xbox Store gift card
  • $20 off coupon for Xbox Design Labs to create your own controller

Xbox One is a fantastic console. Since its launch back in November 2013, they have vastly improved the Xbox One with their updates. While the Xbox One S has its benefits, not everyone has the need to upgrade at the moment. If you currently have an Xbox One and it’s running great, the only reason you would want the new console is because you want it; and that’s fine.

My Xbox One is running great and I have thought about upgrading to the Xbox One S for the upgraded storage but then I found an extra external hard drive and now I don’t have the urge to upgrade. If you want to be able to play your favorite Xbox games to the best of their abilities, you are better off waiting until next year to buy the Xbox Scorpio. If you can’t wait til next year because you are looking forward to Gears of War 4, then save some money and buy the original Xbox One with one of the great deals going on today.
