Among mobile games, Subway Surfers is a longtime contender for most popular.
Taking on the role of a mischievous, young troublemaker, you’ll be running, jumping, and dodging objects to run away from the inspector and his dog. Players will continue to run until colliding with any object which will then cause him/her to start over from the beginning.
Developed by Kiloo and SYBO Games, the rising popularity of Subway Surfers has compelled players around the world to ask for help to improve high scores and to offer advice for choosing power-ups and other in-game goodies.
1. Take Advantage of Power-ups
The game contains a series of power-ups that will aid you on your escape from the grumpy inspector and his dog. Some players will be hesitant to waste time looking up power-ups, or jumping around to try and grab them, but you’d be surprised how big of an impact they can make:
- Jetpack – The ability to fly briefly over all trains and obstacles, bypassing all danger and giving you an edge over the competition. You can even continue to collect coins while in the air!
- Super Sneakers – The ability to increase your speed immensely to put a sizable gap between you and your pursuer.
- Coin Magnet – The ability to collect all coins around you without having to grab them, while active.
- 2x Multiplier – The ability to double your score, while active.
- Double Coins – If you’re willing to hand over some real cash, you can earn the ability to double your coin intake, making you soar above the competition, and be able to buy hoverboards, upgrades, and more.
To being the game, you should always prioritize the Coin Magnet and Jetpack. The more coins you acquire in the beginning, the easier it becomes to purchase single use items. The Jetpack is another great, early pick to keep you out of danger while you learn the ins and outs of the game.
Once you’re confident, make use of the 2x Multiplier. Once you reach x30 you’ll really be pulling in the scores worth bragging about!
2. Memorize Your Combos
Yes, I know this isn’t Street Fighter.
However, there are certain combos you can memorize to enhance your gameplay despite how fighting game-esque they may be:
- Jump + Right / Jump + Right + Right – Dash to the right in mid-air
- Jump + Left / Jump + Left + Left – Dash to the left in mid-air
- Jump + Roll – Cancels your jump and instantly rolls
- Roll + Jump – Cancels your roll and instantly jumps
3. Read Up on Your Hoverboards
Before you spend your hard earned coins on a hoverboard, you should make an educated buy. These hoverboards will only last 30 seconds, and will consequently disappear once you collide with an object.
Something to note– some boards have their own special power:
- Hoverboard (Starter board)
- Big Kahuna
- Bouncer – Super Jump (The same effect as the Super Sneakers)
- Daredevil – Surf Faster
- Freestyler
- Lowrider – Stay Low (You won’t need to roll if you’re using this board)
- Lumberjack
- Miami
- Monster
- Scoot
- Skull Fire
- Starboard (Free to everyone)
- Superhero
4. Stay As High As You Can
Your first instinct might be to stay on top of trains to stay out of danger.
You are absolutely correct.
This is by far the safest way to travel as you attempt to run from the scary, round guard and his treacherous dog. By staying on top of trains, and away from obstacles, you’ll be able to maneuver much easier.
You’ll also be able to jump from the trains to other respective objects. While in the air, you’ll be able to jump diagonally which drastically increases your airtime and distance.
5. Stay on Top of Daily Challenges
By completing your daily challenges, you’ll be working towards a bigger and more substantial reward each day!
To complete a challenge, you’ll need to collect each letter of the given word of the day during your runs. These letters will replace your power-ups until you’ve completed the mission.
Your rewards will increase in value starting with Coins from Day 1 – Day 4, and ending with a Mystery Box on Day 5 and every day past that.
Stay on top of your challenges to earn a Mystery Box per day!
6. Increase Your Multiplier
As I mentioned previously, your score multiplier can be increased to a whopping x30. This means if you’ve scored 100 points, you’ll automatically be awarded 3000 points!
You can max this by completing your list of current missions. Each time you complete a mission, you’ll increase your score multiplier by 1 until you hit 30.
YouTube user DanMay16 has released this video showing how to use the x2 power-ups during the runs (along with the x30) to increase your multiplier to 70.
7. Play on the PC
It’s no secret that any game is much more responsive on the computer rather than a mobile device.

8. Get Your Hands on All of the Keys
By either paying real money, opening them in mystery boxes, or finding them while running through the course, Keys will be a crucial part of your Subway Surfers success.
Keys allow players to continue their game after colliding with an object, basically adding coins in an arcade machine that asks if you’d like to continue.
By having plenty of keys handy, you can keep a run going for a long time, and if you’ve hit the x70 multiplier (mentioned above) you’ll definitely want to keep that run going as long as possible.
9. Unlock Past Limited Edition Items
By going into your phone settings and locating your “Date & Time” option, you can set your clock back to time travel to virtually any date. This discovery will allow you to access limited edition power-ups and hoverboards:
- Zombie Jake – October 3, 2012

10. If All Else Fails, Cheat
There are multitudes of Subway Surfers cheats floating around the internet to give a slight edge to your gameplay.
Jetpack Jump
This is a glitch using the jetpack power-up. As soon as the jet-pack runs out of fuel, swipe up quickly to launch your character through the air.
Lucky Death
This glitch allows you to run into an object and stand still, moving into another lane, and ultimately continuing the game.
When you are between an obstacle (in front of you) and a train (to your right or left), swipe into the train a moment before you die. If you’ve done this glitch correctly, you should be able to swipe in any direction to continue.
Coin Doubler Jetpack
After upgrading your Super Sneakers and Jetpack power-ups, wait until you find a Jetpack during the run to activate your Super Sneakers. With both of these stacked, you should be able to swipe to double all of your current coins.
You can find glitches such as making your hoverboard invisible, changing the direction of your smoke, and more at the Subway Surfers wiki.
